Elite Hosts "Oktoberfest" SAE & IEEE EMC Meeting

Posted on: October 21st, 2009

Topic: Vehicle Telematics Technology

Meeting Date October 20th, 2009

The Chicago chapters of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Society held a joint meeting of the two professional organizations. This was the third such joint meeting in the past six years. Elite Electronic Engineering was proud to both host and sponsor the festive and monumental meeting.

The meeting topic has been selected to overlap the interests of both societies. The keynote presentation, “Current Commercial Telematics Technology”, will explore the concepts, benefits, technology and innovation behind real-time monitoring of commercial vehicles and assets through advanced electronics, GPS systems, and wireless communications.  The speaker will be Emad Isaac, Chief Technology Officer for the Morey Corporation of Woodridge Illinois.

With telematics technology, the exact location of vehicles and assets can be tracked to help fleet operators continually manage equipment, cargo, and personnel. The benefits of telematics asset tracking include improved logistics planning for more fuel-efficient routing and streamline maintenance. Vehicle systems can be monitored for key parameters like fuel usage, battery voltage, engine hours, and fault codes for the purpose of improving fleet efficiency and uptime.  By knowing the operations and maintenance status, fleet managers can direct vehicles to a nearby service station at a time coordinated with drivers required rest period.  Certain applications of telematics also alert fleet managers when vehicles enter or leave designated locations. This is especially useful for homeland security in situations where hazardous truck cargo may be misdirected, stolen, or even hijacked.

As an added interest, members of the Fox Valley Electric Auto Association will have one or two electric vehicles at this event.  The cars will be on display during the social hour and FVEAA members will be on hand to talk about their vehicles and answer questions from meeting attendees.

As with past joint events, this meeting has an “Oktoberfest” theme and includes dinner, refreshments, and music.  The dinner and background polka music make for an enjoyable social event and provides a great opportunity for members of each society to cross-network. Dinner will be German cuisine of bratwurst, pork loin, red cabbage and sauerkraut, as well as apple strudel.  Past SAE-IEEE joint chapter meetings have been very well attended and a large audience is anticipated for this event. Early registration for this meeting is recommended.
