Elite’s New EMP Tests at 50,000V/m RS105 Transient.
Posted on: October 18th, 2010
Elite engineers have recently commissioned a new electromagnetic
pulse (EMP) simulator to perform EMP testing in accordance with MIL-STD-461
RS105 and IEC 61000-4-25. This new capability greatly enhances Elite’s military
testing services and signifies our ability to conduct the complete scope of MIL-461
test services.
The electromagnetic pulse generated from a nuclear weapon detonated high above earth poses a threat not only to military systems, but also to our electric power grid infrastructure. The pulse characteristics include high coupling efficiently to long power line and in turn pose a damage or upset threat to microprocessor based grid electronics. The threat of an EMP attack has taken a more serious turn from rogue governments who have demonstrated a ballistic missile capability and the potential for developing a nuclear weapon program.
Elite’s EMP simulator includes a 1.2 meter tall parallel plate with a table width sized 8 feet by 4 feet. The test produces a radiated pulse of 2.5nsec rise-time and a 28nsec decay time at field strength amplitudes up to 50,000 volts/meter. Test specifications generally require the stepped increase of applied field strength up to the maximum level of 50,000V/m.
