Benjamin the Brave is a young man from Glen Ellyn, IL who is battling TCell All leukemia.  He and his family have an awesome spirit that draws people in to help hold them up when the going is tough.  Benjamin is a 7-year-old kid that was diagnosed after a visit with a suspected ear infection.  When he was at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, his mom told them that he LOVED baseball and the Chicago Cubs; they passed the word to Anthony Rizzo’s Family Foundation and they have become BFFs!

Knowing his mom through the local Jazzercise classes, Elite has taken the opportunity to have fun as a group and SUPPORT BBB.  Elite recently had a blood drive and collected 15 pints of blood; each pint helps 3 patients!  We will do this again to continue to help this young man as he gets platelets after chemo treatments.>

Elite also decided to do a fitness challenge! We have a number of employees, family, and friends tracking their steps each week.  At the end of 44 days (Anthony Rizzo’s number), there will be a winning team to split the pot of the registration fee with BBB.  We have pretty big hearts around here and think BBB will get the whole enchilada!  We have been getting additional donations along the way!

Sine Testing vs. Random Vibration Testing: Which Should You Perform?

When it comes to vibration testing there are two popular types to consider: sine vibration testing and random vibration testing. We receive frequent requests for clarification on which test to run specific products on. The answer is, of course, it depends. Below, we break down the differences between Random Vibration Testing and Sine Vibration Testing to help you determine the best approach.

Sine Vibration Testing

Sine vibration testing applies a single frequency to a test item and selectively excites resonant structures within the device. In a swept sine vibration test, a single-frequency sine tone is ramped up and down through a range of frequencies and for a specified rate and duration. 

What Is Sine Testing Used For?

Sine testing is primarily useful in identifying resonant conditions within a test item. On an electronic module, the circuit boards are often the main resonant structures and typically their fatigue conditions are most important to understand. However, the components themselves mounted on the PCB as well as the electronics housing also have their own unique natural resonant conditions which are usually different from  the circuit boards. Using sine vibration testing to identify resonant conditions on the PCB or on other test item structures is an effective way to understand how mechanical vibration propagates through a device and can help designers stiffen or dampen elements of the product to reduce the probability of fatigue failure.

Swept Sine Vibration Test Applications

A Swept sine vibration test is useful when the product’s application environment includes reciprocating equipment like motors, engines, turbines, or fans. If the application vibration environment has a significant sine characteristic and if the field vibration can be measured then a swept sine vibration test covering the recorded environmental conditions can be run for a specified duration and at an increased amplitude to simulate a lifetime of fatigue stress.   

Sine testing is also helpful to simulate worst-case fatigue exposure by programming an electrodynamic vibration input sine tone to line up with the major resonant frequency of the test item. A vibration test that applies a fixed sine dwell at a resonant frequency will usually generate the highest amplitude displacements and accelerations and therefore the most damaging fatigue stress conditions for the product.  

Random Vibration Testing

random vibration test is one composed of vibration energy at all frequencies over a specified range.  The vibration frequency components that make up the input signal for a random test combine in amplitude and phase to create a time waveform that appears on an oscilloscope as random noise. The characteristics of the random waveform are constantly updating and changing within the bounds of the programmed random input.

Random vibration testing is the most common type of validation and qualification test that is performed for electronic modules. The majority of vibration environments where devices are mounted, especially electronic devices, are characterized as having predominantly random vibration conditions.   

Data-Driven Vibration Testing Services and Test Standards

The most effective vibration test to run is one based on actual field measurements of the specific environment where a product will be operated. By recording the in-situ vibration environment with an accelerometer or multiple accelerometers a random power spectral density plot can be created and run at the level recorded or increased to accelerate fatigue and shorten test time. On a random vibration power spectral density plot, the acceleration amplitude is scaled on the y-axis in units of G2/Hz and the x-axis units in frequency. If the measured vibration environment has sinusoidal characteristics then the random vibration profile can also be tailored to include sine tones applied over the random vibration background.

For both random and sine vibration tests, durable mounting fixtures are critical to a successful test. Elite’s in-house experts apply their expertise to design and fabricate custom fixtures to accurately simulate installed orientation and transmit interference-free vibratory energy.

If your application and project do not afford the option of measuring field vibration conditions, then the following standards provide recommendations for test conditions and durations. Some of the standards are free for download while others are available for download but for a fee.

In most modern applications, Random Vibration Testing is required for qualification, while Sine Testing is used for resonance identification and troubleshooting.

Elite Co-Founder & Matriarch Passes Peacefully This Week

Elite Electronic Engineering, Inc. is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Marilyn Klouda, Co-Founder of Elite and wife of the late James C. Klouda. Marilyn died peacefully on September 7th surrounded by her family.

Marilyn’s contribution to Elite cannot be understated. From the beginning, she worked side-by-side with Jim Klouda and helped create the early vision of Elite as a world-class electronics testing business. In addition to raising Klouda’s five children, Marilyn’s responsibilities at Elite included office manager, technical writing, and typist, along with sales and marketing support.  However, her greatest contribution to the success of the company is the family-oriented culture and spirit that she championed and remains a part of Elite today. Her belief in having employees working together as a family to achieve success is very much a product of Marilyn’s influence and will be her lasting legacy at Elite.

Not So Fast, RED

On June 12, 2016, a one-year transition period began for manufacturers of radio equipment to update their European Union compliance files from conformity with the R&TTE Directive to the new Radio Equipment Directive (RED). After June 13, 2017, all radio transmitters and receivers will need to comply with the RED. But before you rush into compliance with the RED you may want to wait a while and perhaps until after January 2017 to do so.  

As of August 8, 2016, only four harmonized standards have been published in the Official Journal for the new Radio Equipment Directive, and compliance by self-declaration to the RED is only allowed if a harmonized standard, i.e. one is published in the Official Journal (OJ), is applied in full. Otherwise, a radio device manufacturer has to apply alternate conformity assessment processes such as type approval by a notified body. But this approach may be problematic too since there are only a few notified bodies that have been officially recognized to date.

A full suite of harmonized standards was planned to be published in the RED OJ by the start of the transition date in June 2016.  But because there are several significant updates to standards the process to reach a consensus on regulations for new wireless technology has taken much longer than anticipated. The European Commission has announced that it is planning to release RED OJ updates on a more regular basis, but it’s likely we will not see an OJ that includes the more common standards such as EN 300 328, EN 300 220, or EN 301 489 until the end of 2016.

That means that manufacturers of products that are currently assessed under the R&TTE Directive will need to maintain their existing compliance file a bit longer and perhaps up to June 2017. Manufacturers of new transmitter equipment will need to comply with the R&TTE if there is not an applicable standard published in the OJ for the RED.

Restrictions for Wireless Transmitters

The European Commission is finalizing specifications for the labeling on products that will indicate when a transmitter is restricted for use in certain countries. Since the RF spectrum in Europe is not fully harmonized, manufacturers of wireless transmitters must be aware of any unique country restrictions or special limitations for operations. Limitations for use of a transmitter may include operating on unauthorized frequency bands, output power levers that are lower than other EU countries, or shorter transmit duty cycles.

Only the Member States where a restriction exists will be identified on the label. The restriction itself does not have to go on the package but should be noted in the instruction manual. The label and its indication of a possible restriction are meant for the users that buy the product.

The final release of the implementing act specifying the use of this pictogram will come later in 2017. Elite will keep you posted on any updates or official release of the new regulation.

Elite Adds Staff to Ensure Short Lead Times and Grow Capabilities

For 10 years we’ve surveyed our customers asking what they look for when choosing a test lab. We’ve also asked how Elite meets its expectations and for input on ways to improve our services.

The feedback we get reveals that the majority of Elite clients look for technical expertise first followed second by quick lab access and prompt test completion.  In addition, they tell us to deliver this higher standard of service at competitive prices.  Simply stated, Elite clients, want a trusted service partner who can provide the absolute best value and benefit to their organization.  

When we send a client survey or discuss our services with customers, we look closely at survey results, client suggestions, and customer input and then uses this information to align our business direction and decisions with their most important needs.

For example, to keep scheduling lead times low we recently added two new EMC engineers, Justin Ibarra (EE) and Ricardo Parrales (CET). This brings our full-time EMC test staff to a high mark of 26 engineers and technicians.  Having the largest single-site EMC test staff along with multiple sets of test equipment and chambers gives Elite tremendous flexibility in test scheduling. Our resources can be shifted and optimized so we can be more agile than other labs and respond dynamically to customer requests for priority start dates.  

We’re also very fortunate to have a great mix of new and seasoned EMC test engineers. Each is passionate about their work as well as professional and customer-focused. Our test software is developed by two EMC engineers dedicated to creating the test automation that makes us more and more efficient. We have eight senior EMC engineers including team leaders and managers. They provide an invaluable depth of knowledge and mentoring role with the goal of helping our growing staff learn their trade quickly. We’re proud to boast that many of our senior EMC engineers have 20 to 30 years or more of EMC experience with Elite. 

We have also grown our Environmental Stress Lab group by adding Eric Lindberg (EET) and two part-time co-op technicians Alex Dolecki (EE) and Kegan Orloff (EE). Also, during the summer months, we’ve put the talents of three bright engineering interns to work including Jessica Klouda (ME) and Jeff Klouda (CSE) both currently studying engineering at Notre Dame along with Henry Thompson (EE) studying at the University of Illinois.

We greatly enhanced our in-house expertise for mechanical and electrical test automation by bringing senior mechanical engineer Todd Bruhl (ME) to Elite. Having Todd now on board we can respond more efficiently with our life-cycling automation and fixture development. The automation we engineer can be used to support testing either at Elite or for clients to use at their own facilities. Todd is already moving ahead on initiatives to retool and optimize many existing Elite test systems and is working to develop new test stands that will make us even more efficient, accurate, and productive.

Finally, we’ve brought-on Ed Allfrey as a management consultant to help Elite navigate our path through growth and put more structure to our process improvements. We’re leveraging Ed’s 35 years of business consulting and training expertise to keep our business thinking strategic and focused on the most important people and process goals.

Improving Ease of Automation and Fixture Services

With our new fixture expert on board, we not only have the experience and expertise to build out custom fixtures, automation, and material test capabilities in-house, but customers can also talk to Todd directly.  So even if you are not testing at Elite at the time, we can offer additional design and automation services. Here are a few ways that our expanded skill set will streamline your testing experience and help solve your fixture headaches:

Elite Participation in Industry Tech Events

Elite has been very active in participating in training and industry events including seminars and conferences that span a wide range of subjects.  Three interesting seminars we attended include the IoT North America, AEM Product Liability Seminar, and the TCB Council Workshop.

Internet of Things North America- Elite personnel attended the two-day event in Schaumburg IL which included conference sessions and exhibits with a wealth of information including:

  • Ingenu- Ingenu is creating a wireless network providing an M2M network based on RPMA technology to provide 2.4GHz license-free operation over significant distances. But other networks exist and new low-power unlicensed options are emerging for IoT. Over the next few years, it will be interesting to see how technology evolves and how markets respond. 
  • Google’s BigQuery-  In order to be successful with the IoT, businesses need to understand how to work with big data sets that will come from extensive sensor and information networks.
  • Security-  No doubt about it, there’s a sober understanding by engineers, managers, and entrepreneurs on the need to secure information and network access throughout the information chain.

Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) Product Safety & Compliance Seminar-  

For two days Elite’s Steve Laya participated in technical seminars covering the essentials of product safety relating to agricultural, construction, and industrial machinery. The focus of the seminar was to describe the importance of procedures for conducting a risk assessment and risk reduction exercise. Standards such as ISO 12100 for general machine safety along with ISO 14121 for risk assessment were described.  Other seminar sessions keyed in on standards like ISO 25119 for safety-related controls on tractors.

The conference included a hands-on project using a mock machine where participants worked through the hazards analysis as a team and developed a risk assessment. The team members were given a role to play in a hazards analysis exercise (i.e. design engineer, service tech, marketing staff) and were allowed to present the project parameters and constraints to other team members so that the risks could be ranked and preventive measures developed.

TCB Council Workshop-

Dan Crowder attended the annual TCB Council workshop in Baltimore, MD.  The sessions spanned four days and included a range of topics from general to very specific.  The first group of sessions covered the basics of FCC & IC rules as well as how to use FCC and TCB resources. Specific topics covered U-NII, 3650 MHz Band, and MIMO.

Several presentations came from NIST regarding Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) so that manufacturers can leverage testing that is done at one location for several purposes. Updates and the present status of the new European Union Radio Equipment Directive as well as information on Japan MIC, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and Korea.

Elite Receives Boeing Excellence in Advocacy Award

On April 13th, Elite was recognized by Boeing at the Global Supplier Conference for our efforts to connect with Illinois congressman Peter Roskam  (R-IL 6th District) and advocate for the reauthorization of the U.S. Export-Import Bank. The Ex-Im Bank helps support funding for key defense programs and protects incentives that secure manufacturing jobs for our clients and other US businesses. 

In June 2015 the Ex-Im Bank authorization lapsed, but in November 2015 the Export-Import Bank received its congressional reauthorization through 2019.

Congressman Roskam visited Elite in June of 2015 where he toured Elite and met with our ownership, management team, and staff in a company town-hall style event. During the event, Elite employees asked several questions of the congressman including his stance on the Ex-Im Bank.

Kevin Halpin represented Elite during the 2016 Boeing Global Supplier Conference in Seattle, WA, to accept the Excellence in Advocacy award and take part in other meetings.   

Overall, the conference provided a great opportunity to network with Boeing staff and executives, as well as learn about their vision and corporate goals. There was a very positive and bullish outlook from Boeing. However, they also realize that competition is strong in all their markets and that Boeing needs to be an innovator and leader in order to remain successful.  In this competitive environment, Elite is tasked with working hard to do “more for less” with Boeing placing reliability, responsiveness, and first-time quality as top priorities.

We welcome clients to share information with Elite on important regulatory matters or other government/industry actions that may impact your business’s success. In many cases, we may be able to support your cause through our local, state, and federal elected officials in instances where we have mutually beneficial interests.

Time to Comply with New EMC and LVD Directives

The new Directives for EMC 2014/30/EU and for low voltage electrical safety 2014/35/EU are now being enforced. Be sure to take steps now so that your products are in compliance today.

  • Review the new Directives
  • Verify your harmonized standards are still current
  • Make sure your product is marked with manufacturers/importer  information
  •  Confirm product markings for batch or serial number
  •  Publish your updated EMC and LVD DoC

The changes to the new EMC Directive and Low Voltage Directive will impact the administrative part of conformity assessment and not the technical requirements  (Note: the exception being for broadcast receivers or TTE).

As of the date of this blog post, the European Union has not yet updated the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) and the list of harmonized standards for the new directives. The current OJEU provides reference only to the old EMC and LV Directives. We anticipate the EU will be making these changes within the next several months.  

Until the European Union updates the OJEU, manufacturers should identify the new EMC and LVD on their DoC and apply the latest list of harmonized standards referencing the old EMCD and LVD on their new Declaration of Conformity and in their technical files.

Also, if you are an Ag/forestry Tractor manufacturer, note that the functional safety type-approval regulation covering EMC for tractors is in effect as of January 2016.

Elite’s Automotive EMC Lab Recognition

Now Updated for the new Ford and GM specs!

As the leader in automotive EMC testing, we at Elite continue to improve processes, expand capabilities, and strengthen our credentials as a recognized test facility. Our latest efforts have earned us laboratory recognition by Ford and GM Elite for their newly updated corporate EMC standards.

EMC laboratory recognition is a formal and rigorous assessment of a lab’s quality processes, expertise, and capabilities. The evaluation is performed independently by the EMC stewards at each of the big three automotive companies. Our ISO 17025 quality system accreditation is a prerequisite, but the automotive recognition goes far beyond by examining in detail Elite’s test process for each and every EMC and electrical OEM requirement. The examination confirms we are using the proper equipment and that our methods are consistent with those practices by the OEM. The review confirms that our documentation and reported results are clear and concise and that we can demonstrate accurate and consistent results through proficiency testing. In the end, automotive EMC lab recognition is an OEM statement of confidence in Elite recognizing we can execute EMC and electrical tests accurately and efficiently and that our results can be accepted.

For years, Elite has been a fully recognized EMC lab for Chrysler, Ford, and GM. In fact, we remain one of the only approved labs with “full” recognition, meaning that Elite is approved for each and every OEM test method rather than only a selected subset.

Elite is also a recognized Jaguar Land Rover EMC facility and we are approved by Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) for “E” mark testing of components and whole vehicles, and tractors.  

Our automotive recognitions complement our other credentials such as being an FCC Telecommunications Certification Body (TCB) for wireless device certifications, a Canadian certification body, and a European Union Notified Body for the Radio Equipment Directive. We have also achieved the impressive status of iNARTE Organizational Certification which recognizes that at least 70% of our EMC engineers who are eligible for iNARTE certification have achieved the credential.

How did you get into EMI/testing?

Not testing…behind the scenes. The funny thing is I did start my 1st semester in college in an engineering program……yeah. 2nd semester was in the business program!!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of working at Elite?

I love that I can wear many hats.  Being the finance manager is nice but I also get to dabble in HR; I have donned my Oktoberfest dress on occasion, at Christmas parties, and summer events…..we truly are an extended family and that feels nice.

What’s your proudest moment so far?

There are a few moments but one that sticks out in my mind is getting my first MBA and having my parents in the stands.  Before I finished the second one my dad passed; the second one was in HR management and my dad was in HR his whole career.

Another big one was finishing the Komen 3-day breast cancer walk…60 miles in 3 days. I never thought I could do it; not the fundraising or the walking.  Friends and family were so generous I made my financial goal and the walking was hard, fun, tiring, and exhilarating! Finishing the race and seeing Kathy at the finish line made me realize I really was done! Tears flowed; the feeling of accomplishment was overwhelming during the closing ceremonies when each walker took off one shoe and held it up as a sign we made it.

What would you consider to be your passion outside of work? How did you get started in it? Any advice for anyone looking to try this activity?

I am a foodie….born and raised. I love finding new vegetables/fruit in season and growing my herbs each summer. I have gotten proficient in being a container grower as living in a townhome there are rules about planting a garden.

I got started cooking at my grandmother’s side.  When my brothers would go to scout camp I went to grandma camp. It is where I learned to experiment with spices…no measuring; using my senses to cook, smell….taste…true food porn! My grandmother grew up on a farm in Rhode Island where they lived off the land; raised their animals for slaughter and food for the rest of the year and lived off the land, preserving vegetables and fruit in jars and freezers. It is how I learned to make spaghetti ‘gravy’ from scratch and know how to make Italian sausage from scratch too! Grandma and I would watch cooking shows on PBS (way before Food Network came to be) whether I was sitting with her or on the phone with her we would talk about what the chefs were doing/making.

If someone wanted to know more about cooking find a store that does frequent demos (usually free) or classes that can be relatively inexpensive. Look for farmers’ markets and ask questions….people love to talk about their passion for growing. I have learned tips for cooking items I had never seen before.  Don’t be afraid to try. At farmer’s markets you can find produce, locally raised meats (no antibiotics, growth hormones, etc.), oils, and vinegar……..sorry, I get carried away because it is so exciting to me!

Anything that customers/colleagues would find surprising about you?

Hmmm…..that I used to dance ballet (on pointe); I had to learn to play the accordion before I could play the organ (I don’t play instruments anymore); I am working on a cookbook.

If you had a personal motto, what would it be?

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift from God….that is why we call it the present. We have to be in the here and now and enjoy each moment we are given. 

If you could be paid something other than money, what would you choose?

Bartering would be fun so I would choose fruits and veggies in season. I wonder what I could trade it for?!  I wonder if the mortgage company would accept payment that way

New EMC Directive (2014/30/EU)

Starting April 20th, 2016 the current European Union directives for EMC and Low Voltage begin their transition to the new EMC requirements in Directive 2014/30/EU and new requirements for electrical safety in Directive 2014/35/EU. 

For EMC, the new directive 2014/30/EU will not significantly impact the continuing compliance or new compliance for most products. One noted exception will be for broadcast receivers which are moving from the scope of the EMC Directive to the new Radio Equipment Directive.

The technical requirements for EMC will still be defined through harmonized EN standards and the requirements will not change significantly for most products as a result of the transition.   However, all harmonized standards are regularly updated as they evolve with technology.  It’s the manufacturer’s obligation to review the “Europa” website Official Journal on a regular basis and ensure their products remain compliant with the most current revision of the harmonized standards.

We recommend manufacturers read the new directives and information provided at the Europa website or contact Elite to understand how the changes may impact individual products and unique cases. 

At a minimum…

  • Check revision dates of the harmonized standards listed on technical reports and compare them to the current revision of the Official Journal.
  • Review and update the Declaration of Conformity (DoC) accordingly (See Annex IV)
  • Clearly identify the apparatus in the DoC to allow traceability.
  • Review the CE label and confirm it’s correctly applied
  • Confirm the operator’s information and technical instructions comply with the directive’s requirements. (See Annex II (3)).

How did you get into EMI testing?

Honesty this job kind of fell into my lap.  I think a better question is “How did you get into electricity/electronics?” My family owns an Electrical Wholesale Supply Warehouse, so I guess you can say I developed a passion for it early on. I knew a lot of products before starting at Elite so that helped immensely. But I felt my niche was in electricity, not sales.  Being able to use the knowledge I gained in school and an understanding of how components work in electrical systems, I knew I could serve a better purpose. Most of everything I learned on an industrial scale is similarly applied to smaller, component-level circuits.  Not something I wanted to jump into right away, but it really seemed like something I was good at and also enjoyed. This is mostly why I wanted to pursue a degree in engineering. 

What’s the most rewarding aspect of working at Elite?

The working environment really holds everything together.  Of course, the employee benefits are incomparable, and it’s great that Elite sticks by its “families.” 

What’s your proudest moment so far?

Well, I haven’t had children yet, so graduating and landing a job related to my field of study is important. 

What would you consider to be your passion outside of work? How did you get started in it? Any advice for anyone looking to try this activity?

Prepare for the Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU) June 13th, 2016

The new Radio Equipment Directive (RED) begins its transition on June 13th, 2016. Manufacturers can continue listing compliance with the R&TTE until June 13 2017 and can still reference harmonized standards for the R&TTE until this date. However, all new radio equipment will need to comply with the RED after June 13, 2017.

The technical requirements for radio transmitters will continue to be defined through harmonized EN standards and for the most part, the standards will not significantly change strictly as a result of the transition. However, wireless harmonized standards are regularly updated as they evolve for new technology. Looking forward, wireless manufacturers should expect new test requirements for receiver performance and other spectrum sharing techniques like “listen before talk” or adaptive frequency agility.  

Some EMC and electrical safety standards currently listed in the R&TTE may not be updated in time for inclusion in the official journal for the RED by June 13, 2016.  We anticipate a level of confusion over the next several months regarding the self-declaration of transmitters especially for determining the appropriate electrical safety standards.  Contact Elite for the latest status on suitable standards.

Over the next few years, the EU will be working toward a more rigorous system of market surveillance that may include product registration and database listing for products having a high rate of non-compliance.

Other key points to review in the RED include the following sections.

  • Traceability information (art. 10.7 and 12.3)
  • Frequency bands and max transmitted power (art 10.8)
  • EU DoC (art 10.9)

JCK Memorial Scholarship

The IEEE James C. Klouda Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of James C. Klouda and his professional career in the field of electromagnetic compatibility. The Scholarship Fund awards, on an annual basis, a scholarship to a qualified undergraduate student who seeks an electrical engineering degree with an emphasis in the field of EMC or a related discipline, from an accredited U.S. university or college.

This August in Dresden, the 2nd IEEE James C. Klouda Memorial Scholarship Award was presented to Benjamin Conley (unfortunately not in attendance). He was an electrical engineering student at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. We hope that friends and relatives of our customers might benefit from this award as well so please inquire. Contact us for more details on the scholarship and how to apply(or see info below).

Administration:  The selection of the Scholarship recipients will be administered by IEEE EMC-S. EMC-S will serve as administrator of the IEEE JCK Memorial Scholarship Selection Committee.

Eligibility:  The Scholarship Candidate must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student in electrical engineering at an accredited university or college and inside the U.S. (no distance learning or online course students are eligible)
  • Have completed freshman year in an electrical engineering program at an accredited university or college in the U.S.
  • Hold a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale
  • Have completed college coursework in electromagnetic compatibility or in a related discipline

Prize Items: The Scholarship Fund will be used to fund on an annual basis the following annual expenses:

  • A maximum of US$1,000 for one student for school expenses (tuition, books, students fees)
  • EMC-S Student Membership for 12 months to one student

Basis for Judging:

  • Evidence of maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • One referral letter from an individual who is qualified to evaluate the applicant’s academic accomplishments (e.g., professor, administrator, employer, internship organization)
  • Additional consideration will be afforded to scholarship applicants that reside in IEEE Region 4

I play a lot of guitars. I picked it up and started teaching myself to play around the age of 16 with friends’ guitars until I was able to get one of my own. I used to play a lot of sports, nowadays it’s mostly golf.

How did you get into EMI testing?

I found out about Elite and I thought all the different kinds of tests were really cool. When you think about it, your average consumer is just going to buy things/devices and expect them to work, they don’t really think about all the tests and behind-the-scenes work that goes into a device.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of working at Elite?

It’s a company that makes sure products can go out safely into the world and into real physical environments. We do all the behind-the-scenes testing so that regular people and consumers, for instance, can drive a car or hop on a flight and go on vacation without anything to worry about. We make sure it works and the things that get done here have an impact on the everyday lives of millions of people.

What’s your proudest moment so far?

Graduating from UIC with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

What would you consider to be your passion outside of work? How did you get started in it? Any advice for anyone looking to try this activity?

Guitar playing/music are my biggest passions outside of work. I got started in high school at a friend’s house.  We had music playing and I was really starting to get into the classic rock at the time. If I remember correctly, The Lemon Song by Led Zeppelin came on and that was when I decided I wanted to try it out. My friend had a guitar and a Line 6 amplifier so I started to dabble and mess around. He, patiently, showed me some basic chords and terminology and the rest is history, I was obsessed from that point on. My advice to anybody looking to get into guitar playing, or any instrument for that matter, is to not give up. It sounds cliché but it’s true.  Picking up any instrument and trying to teach yourself is difficult but if it is something you really have your mind set on, you will get there. There are plenty of resources these days like YouTube and guitar tablature websites at your fingertips.

Anything that customers/colleagues would find surprising about you?

Our family lived in California when I was younger so I often root for the San Francisco 49ers and the Golden State Warriors alongside my Chicago teams.

Elite Expands its Environmental Test Capabilities…and in a Big Way!

The recent motto around Elite regarding test systems has been… “Go big or go home”,  This certainly applies to our newly commissioned walk-in chamber, mechanical shock machine, and our universal test machine.

New- Walk-In Chamber

With the installation of a new large walk-in chamber, we have increased our biggest climatic test volume fivefold when compared to our previous capability. Our new Thermotron temp-humidity chamber stretches 16ft deep by 11ft wide and 9ft tall and will ramp at change rates of 5C/min between (-67C) and (+85C). It can also control humidity from 95% down to 5% and produce condensing and non-condensing humidity environments as well as frost and ice conditions. The chamber has a reinforced floor for heavy systems and is fitted with three 6-inch diameter access ports and electrical feedthroughs, plus it has two large viewing windows.  

With twin 30hp compressor sets for refrigeration cooling and 72kW of heating elements, Elite test engineers are ready for the largest and most complex types of products and tests that clients can send our way.

New-  Mechanical Shock System

We’ve upgraded our mechanical shock capabilities with a fully automated pneumatic shock table from Vibration & Shock Technologies (VST).  This machine is designed to produce half-sine and sawtooth with far greater amplitudes and a wide range of millisecond durations.  For high G pulses we can reach up to 3000Gs-0.5msec and for long pulse durations, we can extend 100msec (at 10Gs).

The system controller and software will make Elite shock testing more efficient, productive, and cost-effective.  The PC-based controls include preconfigured shock profiles to speed waveshape verification and overall test time. Plus, repetitive shock pulse testing can be programmed for applications that require hundreds or thousands of cumulative pulses.

With this new machine, we have an impressive lineup of shock capabilities, including:

  • Electro-dynamic vibration tables

Our existing ED shakers can produce a wide range of shock pulses in a manner that makes vibration and shock testing quick and efficient. 

  • HALT Synchronized Shock 

Our HALT table can produce “synchronized” shock pulses in excess of 1500gs in single impact or rapid succession (up to 25Hz). 

  • Avco Extreme High-G 

Half-sine shock pulses up to 30,000Gs peak 

  • VST Large Shock Machine

Table size 30” x 30”, payloads up to 1000lbs. 

Shock amplifier to reach 3000g. 

Crash pulses with time durations up to 100msec.

New-  55kLbs Universal Test Machine

With the addition of a 55klb (245kN) universal material tester from MTS, Elite now has a fleet of five machines to test materials and equipment for a range of properties such as strength, deflection, or fatigue. As the largest of our UTMs, this 55k MTS machine more than doubles our test capacity for tensile and compression applications.

In total, our range of machines includes load cells and frames that can measure high force parameters up to 55klbs for tensile or compressive applications, down to 10N load cells for the most delicate force measurements such as for keypad actuation forces.  

Plus our MTS 370 load frame is fully configurable with a temperature chamber capable of cooling to (-73C) and heating to (+315C). We can perform materials testing at a range of temperature extremes while concurrently applying full load conditions.

The applications for these test machines are wide-ranging. They include traditional types of material property measurements such as yield and ultimate strength, modulus, strain, and deflection. We test connectors and cables to evaluate connector lock and unlock forces, connector/wire crimp holding characteristics, beam deflections, and enclosure crushes. If you need answers to how your device will perform when pulled or pushed, Elite can provide the test systems that provide the data—and with precision.

In 1986 I was offered the chance to make a living by reducing the noise produced by the computers we were building at Zenith Data Systems. That is where I honed my skills at guesswork. The company is dead but I live on.

What’s the most rewarding/favorite aspect of working at Elite?

I see different products and people all the time.

Anything that customers/colleagues would find surprising about you?

I hold a US patent for an enclosure design. 

What are you most proud of?

I’m a father to two great sons. It never gets old.

Anything you are particularly passionate about outside of work?

Photography. I’ve been attempting to be good at it since I was a kid. I saved up enough money to buy a camera when I was about 10, then realized I needed more money to buy and develop the film! I like to get up early before the sun rises because morning light is my favorite. Everything looks more dramatic in the morning. I should develop an affinity for evening light because it doesn’t require an alarm clock to catch it.

My advice? Take a lot of pictures.

I like telling this story… while taking classes at DeVry, a classmate of mine told me about a co-op position he had interviewed for, a couple of weeks previously, at Elite.

He had gotten connected with Elite through another DeVry student he knew, who was a Co-Op at Elite.  Since some time had passed since the interview and he never got the call, I asked if he still had the business card. He handed it to me and later that day I made a call to a fellow named James Klouda who asked me to come on in. And the rest is history.

What’s the most rewarding/favorite aspect of working at Elite?

Working with a multitude of customers and chatting with each and helping them to feel welcome here at Elite.

What’s your proudest moment in life so far? 

Becoming a dad for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd time 

Any encouraging words for someone thinking about becoming a Den Leader for Cub Scouts like you are?

You have enrolled your child in scouts for a reason, whether it be for character growth or unique life experiences. Whatever the reason, no one knows better than you what you want scouts to be for your child, so make it that and more.

Anything you are particularly passionate about outside of work?   

  • Drawing, coloring, painting, building forts, wrestling, tea parties, playing sports, movies, video games… with my kids.
  • The precious few quiet relaxing moments with my wife when one or all of the above are not happening.
  • I love working with my hands to install, build, rework and fix things. I often use my vacation days working on projects at my or anybody else’s house who has something interesting going on.
  • I also enjoy anything outdoors: fishing, hiking, biking, and competitive sports.

EMC & Radio Equipment Directives Updates

Two European Commission CE Marking workshops held last year in Brussels Belgium addressed the transposition of the new EMC and Radio Equipment Directives. The workshops answered questions on the conformity assessment requirements during the change from the current EMC and R&TTE Directives to the new legislation.

Here are some of the highlights to report…

When do manufacturers have to state the new Directives on their EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC)?

EMC Directive (EMCD)- The new Directive 2014/30/EU can only be used starting April 20, 2016, and not before.  There is no transitional period and the old Directive 2004/108/EC must be used up to this date (April 20, 2016).

R&TTE Directive (RED)– The new Directive 2014/53/EU can only be used starting June 13, 2016, and not before.  There is a one-year transitional period between June 2016 and June 2017 where the new 2014/53/EU or old 1999/5/EC Directive can be used.

Products transitioning from the EMC Directive to the Radio Equipment Directive

Certain products, such as broadcast receivers, are transitioning from the EMC Directive to the new Radio Equipment Directive. This may create confusion since there is not a transition period for the new EMC directive and different operational dates apply for the EMCD and RED.

The EMC Directive will become the formal requirement on April 20, 2016, and the RED on June 13, 2016.   Since the new EMC Directive does not have a transition period, DoCs for broadcast receivers will need to reference the old Directive 2004/108/EC up to April 20th, 2016. Afterward only the new EMC Directive will apply until June 13, 2016, when the new RED Directive will come into operation. At that date manufacturer’s DoC can list either the new EMC directive or the RED for a period of one year. After June 13, 2017, only the RED will apply.  

Notified Bodies are being directed to include an “end validity date” for currently issued NB Opinions under the R&TTE Directive until June 13, 2017. After this transition period, the R&TTE Directive will no longer apply.

Under the new RED, Notified Bodies (NBs) will issue only an NB EU Type Examination Certificate after June 2016, not an NB Opinion as with the current R&TTE Directive.

The Power Conversion Challenge…Efficiency, Power Output, Size, But What About EMI?

Here at Elite, we test a wide range of electronic devices from small wireless transmitters to large machinery covering applications in automotive, military, industrial, and consumer devices. The common thread for all, regardless of their size or function, is they require efficient and regulated electric power.

The manner in which they control power is typically done by switching, chopping, or pulse width modulation using devices like MOSFETs, IGBTs, and other switched power electronic circuitry. The benefit of designs using these components is they provide greater efficiency, lower DC ripple, and smaller packaging. However, the consequence of their use is they can generate higher levels of electromagnetic interference compared to other power conversion techniques.  

The regulatory and OEM limits for electromagnetic interference restrict conducted RF emissions on power and I/O leads and radiated emissions from the equipment enclosure and cabling. These measurements are performed every day at Elite and they present a challenge to our customers in that they need to engineer the optimum balance for efficiency and high power density while limiting RF interference—it’s not an easy task.

Elite engineers and consultants can troubleshoot and help mitigate conducted and radiated emissions issues when they arise in the lab.  We can certainly spot the emissions signature from switched-mode power supplies and other power conversion designs and then offer in-lab options for solving the problem. But the better approach to solving compliance issues is to design them out early in product development and well ahead of the time that the device arrives at Elite for testing. EMC optimized power supply designs can save time and cost when it comes to product validation and compliance testing.

Stephen Kirk is a Vice President at UL (Underwriters Laboratories) with worldwide responsibility for UL’s consumer technology business, which includes EMC, wireless approvals, interoperability, product safety, and software.  After studying Engineering Science at Oxford University, Stephen worked for a number of years in the electronics industry; before becoming the co-founder of RFI, an electronics consultancy and testing business. He grew this business over a twenty-year period before selling to UL in 2010.

Question…  So why should I care about the 2015 Symposium on EMC and SI?

Answer…  Circuit designers that build their products with a high level of digital signal integrity improve their EMC performance, and attending this year’s Symposium will grow your understanding of signal and power integrity as it relates to EMC.

For digital electronics to operate properly their signal voltage, currents, waveforms, and timing must be within specified tolerances. Transmission line lengths and timing delays, impedance mismatches, and closely spaced coupled circuits create distortions to the digital waveform. These distortions and transmission line losses increase potential RF susceptibilities and induce common mode currents that lead to radio frequency interference problems.

Digital circuits with a high level of signal integrity have a higher noise margin and provide a more robust RF immune product. High speed/high edge rates contribute to electromagnetic emissions from circuits and low power consumption design trends are increasing the sensitivity of circuits. Simply put, a high level of signal integrity equals better EMC performance.

This year’s Symposium includes an impressive slate of EMC, Signal Integrity (SI), and Power Integrity (PI) workshops and technical presentations. Employee Spotlight: Josh Barker

Every one of us is more than just our work and the services we provide. We have families, hobbies, and other passions that fulfill our lives and make us better at what we do each day.  After working in this industry for a few years, I’ve gotten to know many of the people that make up the EMC community at large and at Elite. Here is a brief look at what makes our Elite family so unique and diverse…

The bitter winter winds have been howling and snow piling up around the country, but there is at least one engineer here in Chicago who doesn’t mind the cold.  In fact, he embraces it.  Josh Barker is a fairly recent addition to our EMC Automotive team who certainly moved to the right place to pursue his passions for electronics, as well as the seemingly bleakest of seasons. Read below to learn a little more about this bright, adventurous, and bearded Baltimore transplant:

How did you get into Electromagnetic Compatibility testing?

EMC testing just kind of fell into my lap. I have always been interested in Electronics and how they communicate with each other and EMC just seemed to be the next logical step.

What is the most rewarding/favorite aspect of working at Elite?

I guess the flexibility that comes with the job is my favorite part of working here at Elite. Sure there are deadlines that have to be met. But, when the job is done and all the “i’s” have been dotted, then things can get pretty fun around here.

What’s your proudest moment in life so far? 

I would hope my proudest moment in life is yet to come, but, I would have to say finishing the “tough mudder” with my group of friends.

As far as experience goes, it really came down to a challenge that I thought was so out of reach that just doing something even close to that was unobtainable. And then my friends said that they could conquer it, I am not one to be one-upped by the people around me so, of course, I signed up and trained to make it through. Surprisingly after completing it, it seemed like it was much easier than first thought. But just getting through something that I thought was out of my reach was a great feeling.

If you had a personal motto, what would it be?

“If you are going to be dumb, you got to be tough!” — Tough Mudder slogan

Anything that customers/colleagues would find surprising about you?

I like winter! Not many people would say the same, but, nothing is as adventurous as trudging through the snow with a frozen beard on your face.

Speaking of winter, I hear you enjoy something called “winter kayaking”.  How did you get started in that and what makes it worth braving the elements?

I started winter kayaking a few years ago. It sounds like a horrible and cold idea, I know. My friends and I wanted to get kayaks and they went on sale in the middle of winter. So, we bought them, and when you buy something you want to try it out as soon as possible–however, it was the middle of winter. So, we decided to head out on the river while it was well below freezing. After struggling to get into the kayaks without tripping into the water, we finally got on the river and started heading upstream. It wasn’t long before we found a part of the river that had a thin layer of ice over the surface. As our boats passed on the ice, they broke and floated away. Then there was the thicker part of the ice. We charged it with our kayaking taking turns to ram the “ice bridge” until it would break and float downstream. On the colder days, icicles would form on my beard and any water that you splashed on your kayak would crystallize almost immediately into ice.

If you could ask anyone to be your valentine (living, dead or fictional), who would it be? How would you ask?

Elsa from “Frozen”. I would have done it a few weeks ago when there was snow everywhere walk up to her door and whisper through the keyhole… “Do you want to build a snowman?” Not only can we have fun in the snow but we could share the experience with everyone around us. Also, there would be winter kayaking, so, there’s that.

ETS-Lindgren offers hands-on training courses throughout the year. Below is a list of those courses currently scheduled through ETS-U:

Fundamentals of EMC Testing – A three-day hands-on course designed for engineers or lab technicians who want to expand their knowledge of EMC compliance testing, or are new to the subject and want to “learn how” quickly. Instruction is divided between class lectures and hands-on lab experience. Students are taught how to perform actual tests in a fully instrumented lab that includes a 3-meter anechoic chamber, GTEM, and a demonstration reverberation chamber. Students receive an illustrated textbook written specifically for the Fundamentals of EMC Testing course, with many of the test setups illustrated.

MIL-STD 461F Testing – A three-day hands-on course designed for engineers or lab technicians who want to expand their knowledge of Military-Standard 461F testing, or are new to the subject and want to “learn how” quickly. Instruction is divided between class lectures and hands-on lab experience. Students are taught how to perform actual tests in a fully instrumented lab that includes a semi-anechoic chamber and a conducted susceptibility test station. Students receive an illustrated textbook written specifically for the Fundamentals of EMC Testing course, with many of the test setups illustrated.

Overview of Radiated Immunity/Emissions Test Facilities – A three-day hands-on course designed for engineers or lab technicians who want to expand their knowledge of Radiated Immunity and Emissions test facilities, or are new to the subject and want to “learn how” quickly. This course will provide a basis for making informed radiated emission/immunity testing decisions. In addition, this course will also cover some standards overview, test planning issues, detailed coverage of major test techniques, sources of uncertainty in test results, and uncertainty propagation and impact on test results.

Henry Ott Consultants offers a three-day course covering the practical aspects of noise and interference control in electronic systems. More information is available on their website, both on the public and in-plant EMC courses.

Electromagnetic Compatibility Engineering – This course will provide the participants with a working knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility principles. Emphasis is on cost-effective EMC design for digital systems. The commercial and industrial aspects of EMC Engineering are emphasized. The amount and complexity of mathematics will be kept to a minimum, and ideas will be illustrated with examples of actual case histories.

Kimmel Gerke Associates offers several public seminars throughout the year. Following are course descriptions and dates and locations of those courses currently scheduled:

Design for EMC & Signal Integrity (2 days)

EMI Troubleshooting (1 day – optional add-on) – This very popular class has been co-hosted by Kimmel Gerke Associates and Tektronix since 1992. The focus is “inside the box” at the electronics level – components, printed circuit boards, power electronics, grounding, and shielding, with over 30 specific fixes. The class is introductory and is regularly updated to reflect the latest EMC design issues.

Silent Solutions offers a series of courses designed to expand your skills and improve job performance. Following are their course descriptions.

Electronic Product Design and Retrofit for EMC – This two-day class gives engineering professionals the ability to successfully recognize, solve and avoid common EMI problems. Demonstrations using working hardware illustrate concepts such as radiated emissions, high-frequency antennas, radiated and conducted immunity, and crosstalk in connectors, cables, and IC packages.

EMC – Printed Circuit Board Design – This two-day class provides technical training intended for electrical and EMC engineers interested only in PC board design. It is an excellent follow-up class for students who have recently completed our two or three-day EMC class. Course topics include component placement, signal routing, and stack up, power bus decoupling, signal theory and signal integrity, “ground” splits, and a critique of bad application notes from IC vendors.

Circuit-to-Circuit Interference – This one-day class is for electrical design engineers at all levels challenged by electrical noise problems in products containing RF (wireless), analog, switching power supply, and digital electronics. Through a unique combination of lectures and hands-on experiments, class participants will master the ability to anticipate, solve and avoid electrical noise problems that can inhibit functionality in new product designs. 

Mechanical Design for EMC – This two-day class provides clear applications, theory, and demonstrations for the successful design of mechanical enclosures for good system emissions and immunity performance. Key topics include grounding at the PCB and enclosure, system ground maps, PCB component placement and control drawings, enclosure and cable shielding, PCB device “cans”, resonant slots and enclosures, heat sinks, unintentional antennas, as well as connectors, screw, and conductive gasket spacing.

Grounding for EMC, Signal Integrity and Instrumentation – Theory, applications and hardware demonstrations in this one-day class describes the effective design and troubleshooting techniques. The real-time demonstrations use a spectrum analyzer, oscilloscope, and signal generators to illustrate inductance, common-impedance coupling, and ground loops. Specific examples of single-point, multi-point, “good” and “bad” grounds will be discussed.

Mastering the Spectrum Analyzer for Electrical Noise Measurement – SILENT’s one-day class is packed with practical tips, applications, and demonstrations to help make it easy for you to pick up a spectrum analyzer and start measuring and troubleshooting electrical noise and EMC problems. We will have a minimum of 3 different spectrum analyzers in class to help explain and demonstrate operating techniques that we have honed over the last twenty years.

Design Troubleshooting, EMC, and ESD – This three-day seminar takes the best points from Doug Smith’s seminars and compresses them into three action-packed days with lectures, videos, and many demonstrations on live circuits. Time is allowed for attendees to operate the experiments if they want. In two days, you will learn how to make accurate measurements in the lab and then apply those techniques to design verification and troubleshooting as well as EMC problems. The techniques and experiments are geared to the development lab and common equipment found there. During an optional third day, ESD/EMI at the system level will be covered as well as applying system level ESD stress to components, such as LEDs, in a test environment.

Dr. Tom Van Doren teaches participants how to diagnose and solve electromagnetic interference and signal integrity problems.

Grounding & Shielding of Electronic Systems – This course treats signals and currents; explains fundamental grounding, shielding, and signal routing principles; clarifies troublesome terminology; and demonstrates many techniques for identifying and fixing electrical interference problems. The principles will be described as concepts rather than theoretical equations. The emphasis on concepts will make the course useful for people with technical experience ranging from beginners to advanced designers. Since many noise emission and susceptibility problems are related to the mechanical design of systems, mechanical engineers and technicians can benefit from attendance. Several interface mechanisms and shielding techniques will be demonstrated. Additional details about the course can be found here.

Understanding Ground Resistance Testing Training Seminar (In Chicago – 9/22/15) – This one-day training seminar consists of two sessions. The first session consists of classroom presentations and discussions on all aspects of soil resistivity and ground resistance testing. The second session consists of on-site field tests demonstrating the different methods of ground resistance testing discussed during the first half of the day. Participants will have the opportunity for hands-on experience and demonstrations of proper testing procedures including measurement of soil resistivity, correct placement of test rods, using the 3-Point method, and proper use of the clamp-on test method.
